1. (Common Noun) The common snipe is a medium-sized wading bird with a long, straight, pointed, black bill.It is found in entire Indian Subcontinent also in Bangladesh,Myanmar, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. It is a permanent resident of Kashmir and the Himalayas. It arrives in plains about September and leaves by April. Common snipe can be found in wet grassy areas of freshwater marshes, ponds, fields and occasionally, salt marshes. The long, pointed bill of the common snipe helps it probe in the mud for snails, insects, larvae and earthworms. It also eats some plant matter. It usually stays hidden in the grass, but if it is startled it will burst out from its cover and fly in a zig-zag pattern to evade predators.
